Review: Primus PrimeTech Gas Stove Set 1.3-litre

The Primus PrimeTech stove gets a review from Bogong Equipment owner Neil Blundy, out in the field, at Wilsons Prom.

In this video, Neil Blundy runs through what's included in a Primus PrimeTech stove set, what the various bits and pieces are for and how they connect together, and talks through details like the non-stick surface, special billy grips and lid features.

The Primus PrimeTech is a gas-operated stove that runs on a gas cylinder (which you buy separately).

Regulated Gas Stove for Camping and Hiking

This is a regulated gas stove. The stove has a regulator to help you get maximum efficiency out of the stove. What that means is, it produces a constant pressure in the cylinder, as the gas runs out of the stove. This way, can use every last little bit of gas in the cannister. Once the gas gets down to say, one third, the stove will still run efficiently.

Stable Hiking Stove

The Primus PrimeTech Stove Set has a remote outrigger for the gas cannister, which means it's extremely safe and very stable – unlike conventional gas stoves, where, typically, the stove is perched on top of the gas can in a tall, precarious set-up that could topple in windy conditions. The Primus PrimeTech also has an integrated wind screen.

Prime PrimeTech: What's Included

  • Stove unit
  • Gas burner
  • Remote outrigger for the gas cannister
  • Pot with durable ceramic, non-stick finish and heat exchanger
  • Hard-anodised aluminium pot
  • Transparent Triton™ lid with silicon grip, venting holes and gap for pot gripper
  • Pot gripper
  • Piezo igniter

Primus PrimeTech Insulated Stuff Sack

The Primus PrimeTech comes in a stuff sack that is insulated, which means you can put a pot with recently cooked food inside the stuff sack to keep it warm while you cook the rest of your meal.

Siliconised Pot Grippers

  • Lock onto stove (won't fall off)
  • Press red button to release
  • Siliconised where contacts with pot (won't scratch or indent pot)

Pot with Heat Exchanger

The advantage of the heat exchanger is that it increases the stove's efficiency by about 50 per cent.

Primus Stove Brand

Primus, as a brand, knows a thing or two about making stoves. Primus has been making stoves for a long time. Scott of the Antarctic was using a Primus stove, way back then.

Primus PrimeTech Boil Time (Real-World)

Neil also tested the real-world boil time. For 600ml of water, it took 2 minutes 40 seconds to achieve a rolling boil, in breezy conditions at Wilsons Prom. That's pretty good. See the video below.
